Sioux Falls Storm News Release

One in three women dies of cardiovascular disease. It's the number one killer of women, taking more lives than the next five causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer.

That's why the Sioux Falls Storm Arena Football Team is taking action. On Friday, February 6th, National Wear Red Day, the building housing the Sioux Falls Storm office will Go Red for Women. The Storm will also be handing out information about Go Red For Women and the American Heart Association.

"The American Heart Association would like to commend the Sioux Falls Storm for recognizing the danger of cardiovascular disease and doing what they can to educate women about it," says Mary Michaels, Grassroots Advocacy Director for the American Heart Association of South Dakota. "It shows how much the Storm care about their community."

The American Heart Association's Go Red for Women movement raises women's awareness of their risk for heart disease and helps them learn-and take action to reduce-their personal risk for heart disease. Part of this movement includes turning landmarks like the Sioux Falls Storm building red. Other landmarks and famous places going red in South Dakota this year include the State Capitol, Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, Downtown Sioux Falls, and the Falls in Sioux Falls. Nationwide, landmarks going red include the Space Needle in Seattle, Niagara Falls, and Graceland, former home of Elvis Presley.

More than a thousand South Dakota women have joined the movement so far by logging on to www.GoRedForWomen.org. Dozens will turn out for the Go Red for Women Luncheon in Sioux Falls February 19th from 10 am-1 pm at the Ramkota Rushmore Room.

The Go Red for Women luncheon is sponsored locally by Avera Heart Hospital (presenting sponsor), and Sanford Heart and Vascular Hospital. It's sponsored nationally by Macy's and Merck. For more information about Go Red for Women, log onto www.GoRedForWomen.org.
