Sioux Falls Storm News Release
The Sioux Falls Storm will continue the greatest run in indoor football history as the Storm will play in their fifth consecutive championship game. The team lost Indoor Bowl IV as members of the National Indoor Football League (NIFL) and then went on to win three straight United Bowls as members of the United Indoor Football Association. The Storm (12-3) will play the Bloomington (IL) Extreme (8-7) at the Sioux Falls Arena on July 12 in United Bowl IV.
During this unprecedented run, the Storm won a professional record 40 consecutive games from July 30, 2005 to March 29, 2008. The Storm broke the record that was held by the Ohio Valley Greyhounds, who won 27 straight games from 2002-2003 as members of the NIFL.
Storm Head Coach Kurtiss Riggs is in his sixth season at the helm of the team. He has compiled a record of 80-20 (including postseason). Riggs was named 2006 and 2007 UIF Coach of the Year after leading the Storm to unbeaten records and United Bowl titles in each season. Riggs began his coaching duties with the Storm in 2002 as the offensive coordinator. Kurtiss spent the 2001 season as a quarterback for the Storm and the 2000 season for the Cobras of the IFL. Riggs is a 1997 graduate of the University of Sioux Falls in Sioux Falls, where he earned All-American honors after leading the Cougars to the NAIA National Championship in 1996, while setting many passing records along the way.
The Storm is one of the few teams in the league with a truly home-grown roster. Of the 30 players on the roster, 15 either grew up or played collegiately in South Dakota. Seven played college ball or grew up in Minnesota and four have ties to the state of Iowa.
The Sioux Falls Storm is in its eighth year of play and has an all-time record of 85-31 in regular season games and a 12-3 record in the postseason. United Indoor Football (UIF) was established for the 2005 season and is the county's premier indoor professional football league. The UIF currently consists of eight teams stretched from Bloomington, IL in the east to Billings, MT in the west.
