Dayton Silverbacks News Release
(Troy, OH) Being the cousin of Heisman Trophy Winner Chris Weinke (QB, Carolina Panthers) can sometimes overshadow your own accomplishments. Freddie Weinke, a recent addition to the Miami Valley Silverbacks 2007 roster, is making his own path in football.
Freddie (6'3", 270) will continue his quest to the Arena Football League through the channels of the GLIFL.
"Freddie with be an impact player for us," said Silverbacks General Manager and Head Coach Matthew King. "In this league we can use an Offensive Lineman as a Tight End. Freddie is not only a good blocker, but he has excellent hands."
Weinke played for Iowa State University for two seasons, after transferring from the University of South Dakota. Weinke also brings GLIFL experience to the Silverbacks. He played four games for the Marion Mayhem in 2006 before leaving to finish his degree.
"Freddie has the ability to help us on both sides of the ball," stated Silverbacks Defensive Coordinator Carl Allen. "He can also play Defensive Line and that will be a big asset to our team."
Weinke is the cousin of Chris Weinke, a Heisman Trophy Winner and Standout Quarterback at Florida State University.
The Silverbacks, a member of the Great Lakes Indoor Football League, are gearing up for their 2007 home opener on March 30th. Silverbacks' season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at Hobart Arena, or at (937) 718-7044. Season ticket information is available on the Silverbacks website at www.silverbacksfootball.com.
