Atlanta Silverbacks News Release

Atlanta, Ga. (August 7, 2014) - As the Atlanta Silverbacks push for a spot in The Championship, the league's new four-team postseason format, the team will have the services of another versatile player. The Silverbacks announced Thursday that Costa Rican midfielder Brandon Poltronieri has signed a contract with the club, pending league and ITC approval.

The 28-year-old midfielder has been training with the Silverbacks for the last several weeks, and has impressed the coaching staff enough to earn a contract. Poltronieri comes to Atlanta from Costa Rican first division side AD Carmelita, where he spent the first part of the 2014 season.

Poltronieri was actually born in Los Angeles, California, but moved to Aserrí, Costa Rica at a young age. The 5-foot-9 midfielder began his professional career in 2008 as a member of Costa Rican side Brujas FC, where he would eventually play alongside current Silverbacks defender Ryan Roushandel.

While at Brujas FC, Poltronieri went out on loan to Leixões SC of the Portuguese top flight. Following his stint in Portugal in 2009, he returned to Costa Rica, where he would play for two more clubs (Barrio México and Universidad de Costa Rica) from 2010-2013 before settling in at AD Carmelita.

Earlier this year, the former Costa Rica youth international was a key player for AD Carmelita, making 18 appearances and scoring two goals.

Poltronieri is a left-footed player that prefers playing left midfield, however, he can also be deployed as a center midfielder or left back. He will wear #17 for the Silverbacks.

The club revealed one other roster move on Thursday, announcing the release of goalkeeper Derby Carrillo. The California native made seven total appearances for the Silverbacks this year, playing in four league games and three U.S. Open Cup games. The club now has three goalkeepers on its roster: Joe Nasco, Eric Ati, and Thomas Hunter.

The Silverbacks host the New York Cosmos this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Atlanta Silverbacks Park. Tickets can be purchased over the phone at 404-969-4900 or online.
