Silverbacks prepare for first postseason contest
June 26, 2007 - Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL)
Dayton Silverbacks News Release
The pairings are set, and the Miami Valley Silverbacks are anxiously awaiting their trip to Chicago Saturday night for the first round of the Continental Indoor Football League Great Lakes Division playoffs.
"This is a huge deal for us," Silverbacks coach Carl Allen said. "It is something we have been working for as an organization. "We want to go up there and represent the organization as well as we can. We are excited about the opportunity."
The Silverbacks are 0-2 against the Chicago Slaughter this season, but things will be a little different this time around. The Slaughter lost their starting quarterback in their regular season finale to a torn ligament in the thumb on his throwing hand. Meanwhile, the Silverbacks will be at full force.
In their first game at the Sears Center, the Silverbacks were shorthanded due to the Friday contest conflicting with work schedules of some of their players.
"They have to adjust to having a new quarterback," Allen said. "And, we will have everyone with us this time. "Last time we played them, we were severely shorthanded and lost by one (48-47)."
Miami Valley led for most of the game in Chicago, but the Slaughter returned a kickoff for a touchdown with less than a minute left in the game to take a one point lead. They held on after the Silverbacks turned the ball over on their last possession of the contest.
Despite struggling on the road this season to close out games, Allen believes the Silverbacks are starting to come together at the right time of the year.
"I think we are starting to get confidence playing on the road," Allen said. "Actually, we have played well on the road. "We have just had problems closing out games. That is something we have to do this week."
A win over the Slaughter would put the Silverbacks at Port Huron next weekend in the Division semi-finals.
