Silverbacks Finish Regular Season with Important Road Trip to Canada
September 4, 2007 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Atlanta Silverbacks News Release
The Atlanta Silverbacks (12-8-6) will complete their 2007 regular season this week with a two-game away stand in Canada. The team will travel to our northern neighbors to take on the Montreal Impact on Wednesday (9.5.07) and the Vancouver Whitecaps on Friday (9.7.07).
The Silverbacks currently sit in fourth place of the USL First Division with 42 points in 26 games played so far this season. Atlanta has secured a spot in the postseason but the team remains in a battle to earn one of the top four first-round seeds. The four final teams in the highly sought after top spots will determine whether they play at home for the first or second leg of the two game aggregate goal series.
Atlanta is coming off a 3-1 home win over the Puerto Rico Islanders from Saturday night (9.1.07). The 'Backs reminded the Islanders of their diverse offense and multiple scoring threats when three different Atlanta forwards put away goals - Machel Millwood, Warren Ukah, and Anthony Wolfe. The assist column was as varied as the goals column with assists from Tony McManus, David Hayes, and Scott Buete. McManus and Buete earned Team of the Week honors for their assists as well as their efforts in the match.
The Silverbacks and the Impact last met in Atlanta on April 21 in the first match of the season for both sides. The game resulted in a 2-2 draw with both Atlanta goals coming from former Impact forward Daniel Antoniuk. Last season, Atlanta fell to Montreal 2-1 at home and 4-1 on the road in Canada. Wednesday night's match is Montreal's last home match of the regular season and the crowd will surely play a large part in the atmosphere. The Silverbacks will be without Hayes who received a red card in Friday night's match against Puerto Rico, in addition to Rafique Hassim and Justin Moore who are out with injuries.
The Silverbacks will play in the first round of the USL First Division playoffs on the weekend of September 14, 15, and 16. Keep up-to-date with the latest information at www.atlantasilverbacks.com.
