Silverbacks face champs in first game
March 20, 2007 - Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL)
Dayton Silverbacks News Release
(Troy, OH) The Miami Valley Silverbacks professional indoor football team will make their way to Port Huron, Michigan this Saturday for their first game of the 2007 season.
The Silverbacks will be taking on the fierce Port Huron Pirates. The Pirates, last years GLIFL Champions, have never lost a game. They were undefeated in their inaugural season in 2006.
Since then the Great Lakes Indoor Football League has grown from six teams to fourteen teams, and the league was since renamed the Continental Indoor Football League.
Those changes haven't seemed to affect the Pirates. Saturday night they defeated the Rochester Raiders, who were the 2006 GLIFL runner-ups, by a final score of 62-30.
"It's a good situation for us," stated Silverbacks Head Coach and General Manager Matthew King. "They are the best, and until somebody beats them, they deserve that title. We are excited to be playing them early, because it will be a true test for us. We will know right out of the gate where we stand in this league. Hopefully we can play with the best."
The Silverbacks hope to match talent and speed with the Pirates. "They are very good, and I won't take that away from them. On the other hand, we have some talent on our team this season, and we believe that at this level anything can happen in a game," King added. "We give them the respect that they deserve, but we plan on going to Port Huron to win the football game. If that is not our mindset, then we shouldn't be playing the game."
The Silverbacks, a member of the Continental Indoor Football League, are gearing up for their 2007 home opener against the Chicago Slaughter on March 30th at Rapid Fire Field at Hobart Arena. Silverbacks' tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at Hobart Arena, online at www.silverbacksfootball.com, or by calling (937) 339-2911.
