Dayton Silverbacks News Release

The Miami Valley Silverbacks reached into the history of Dayton football in selecting the third head coach in franchise history.

Former Meadowdale standout Derrick Shepard returns to his hometown to take over as the Silverbacks head coach.

"I am very excited to be a part of the organization as the head coach," Shepard said. "This is a chance for me to give back to individuals not only trying to better themselves as players, but also as a person.

"I am a former player, so I know what it takes to get the best out of a player. I know what it takes to help an organization improve on the field and with getting involved with the community."

Following a standout prep career at Meadowdale, Shepard went on to star at Georgia Tech before spending time with the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots. He also spent seven years in the AFL with the Arizona Rattlers. Shepard was the offensive and defensive line coach for the Silverbacks last season.

"We are excited about hiring Derrick," Silverbacks president Matthew King said. "We had six highly qualified candidates for the position and we strongly felt he was the best candidate.

"We worked with him last year, and already have developed a strong working bond, he has a good personality and I believe he can be the best head coach we have had."

Shepard replaces Carl Allen, who led the Silverbacks to their lone playoff appearance in 2007.

"We have a lot of anticipation for the future of this team with him as our head coach," Silverbacks owner Jeff Kolaczkowski said. "With his experience, knowledge and how he works with the players, we believe he will lead this team to success and do it in a way everyone can be proud of."

The Silverbacks will hold their first player tryout on Oct. 26 at Action Sports (formerly Gateway). To pre-register for tryouts, or for more information, visit the team's website at www.silverbacksfootball.com. The Silverbacks are also currently taking applications for a choreographer for the Silverbabes, the official dance team of the Silverbacks. Anyone interested in applying should email their resume to johnc@silverbacksfootball.com.
