April 23, 2018 - Pacific Association (PA)
Napa Silverados News Release

The Napa Silverados selected five players in their very first Pacific Association league tryout draft on Saturday, including a Napa native and two multi-sport athletes.

"We had a solid roster going into today, as Tito and Assistant General Manager Megan Castellucci have done a nice job of recruiting, but we are looking for a few hidden gems. This is a great opportunity for us to reinforce the roster and perhaps find a player or two who can make a difference in our lineup," said Silverados President and General Manager Bruce Johnston.

The Silverados and Martinez Clippers were each awarded two of the top four picks with the first pick determined by a coin flip.

The Silverados selected:

1. Mateo Fernandez, LHP - Napa, CA

Fernandez is a Vintage High School graduate who also played at Napa Valley College for two seasons.

"Mateo has a great arm, good control and will compete for a spot on the roster. When he gets back into baseball shape, we expect him to throw in the low 90's with a tough curveball," said Silverados manager Tito Fuentes Jr.

2. Corey Hammell, RHP - Santa Rosa, CA

Sonoma County native Hammell is a two-sport athlete, having recently played professional basketball in Ireland.

3. Jeffrey Lavulo, 1B/OF

Lavulo attended Los Cerritos Junior College in Southern California before heading to West Texas A&M on a football scholarship. and broke his leg, ending his football career. Lavulo is currently employed as a dancer at Walt Disney World in Orlando FL.

4. Jordan Matos, INF - Boston, MA

Matos most recently played in the Empire League in 2017 after attending the College of Saint Joseph's.

5. Nick Kern, SS, 2B - Brea, CA

The Southern California native graduated from UCLA in 2017, where he played second base and shortstop.

"There will be great competition for our middle infield spots and Nick will be in the mix," Fuentes said.
