San Antonio Stars News Release
San Antonio visits its second Eastern Conference opponent of the season on Tuesday after completing the two-game series sweep of reigning Eastern Conference champion Atlanta on Sunday. It marks the return to Allstate Arena for Jia Perkins, who spent five seasons with the Sky before being traded on April 20, 2011.
Silver Stars Notes
FRANCHISE-BEST START: The Silver Stars 6-1 record marks the best start in franchise history through the first five games ... The previous best start of 4-3 was accomplished in 2002, 2006 and 2007 ... San Antonio's best start through eight games is 5-3, accomplished in 2002.
LEAGUE-BEST RECORD: At 6-1 San Antonio has the best record in the WNBA with an .857 win percentage ... The Silver Stars enter Tuesday's game with a 1.5 game lead in the Western Conference ... Indiana leads the East at 6-3 overall.
WNBA ALL-STAR VOTING: Jayne Appel, Becky Hammon, Jia Perkins, Ruth Riley and Sophia Young represent San Antonio on the ballot for the first WNBA All-Star Game hosted by the Silver Stars in franchise history ... Voting ends at midnight ET on July 10.
HAMMON AMONG TOP 15 NOMINEES: Four players with ties to the San Antonio Silver Stars franchise have been named as some of the 30 nominees for the WNBA Top 15 players of all-time, in celebration of the league's 15th anniversary ... Guard Becky Hammon represents the squad as the only current player among the nominees.
BENCH SCORING: San Antonio currently boasts the best bench in the WNBA, with its reserves accounting for almost half (49.2 percent) of the team's scoring this season.
SWEPT AWAY: San Antonio earned its first series sweep of the season with a 92-86 win at Atlanta on Sunday ... It was the first series sweep of the Dream for the Silver Stars since 2008 as Atlanta swept the two-game series in both 2009 and 2010.
Player Spotlight
Guard Jia Perkins had a break-out week for the Silver Stars last week, netting 71 points and 20 rebounds through three games. Perkins netted a season-high 31 points to lead San Antonio to a 105-98 overtime win against Los Angeles and followed that up with a team-best 25 points in the comeback win at Atlanta.
Perkins averaged 23.7 points per game last week, shooting 61 percent from the floor, 46.7 percent from behind the arc and 93.3 from the charity stripe.
San Antonio brings the best record in the WNBA to historic Madison Square Garden on Friday. The Silver Stars will be looking for its first series win against the Liberty in the past three meetings and its first win at MSG since it defeated New York, 82-76 on Sept. 9, 2008.
