COACH'S CORNER:
Silver Stars' Head Coach Dan Hughes' thoughts on this week's opponents:
On the Minnesota Lynx-
"Minnesota is a different team without Katie Smith and what I really see in this team is more emphasis being put on their post players. I see them trying to get the ball more now to Nicole Ohlde, Vanessa Hayden and Tamika Williams off the bench. I also see Kristi Harrower and Svetlana Abrosimova being more assertive offensively and picking up more of the scoring load. The Lynx have been one of the best teams in the league at home so we are really going to have to come in and dictate tempo and execute well."
On the Indiana Fever-
"I think when you talk about Indiana you talk about Tamika Catchings and her âMost Valuable Player' type of performance this year. Catchings can hurt you from the perimeter, on the glass, with the penetration and her energy. I think Tully Bevilaqua has been a real key to their improvement. At the point position, she has played outstanding and I think she has been the difference in what the Fever were at the beginning of the season to where they are now. Indiana is also a very good defensive team who have proven themselves and cause you to turn it over so we will have to do a good job of taking care of the ball."
On the Detroit Shock-
"I do not think any league will ever see another team that has five all-stars in their starting line up and that is exactly what they have. When you look at that you see Deanna Nolan who is scoring regularly and is the most creative scorer in our league, Elaine Powell who is back from suspension, the addition of Katie Smith and Swin Cash, Cheryl Ford and Ruth Riley all inside. The Shock are a veteran group who push the envelope at you. They need to make a strong push here at the end of the season, so they will be a highly motivated team and controlling the tempo the game will be huge."
SILVER STARS GAME NOTES
TURN OF THE CENTURY: Shannon "Pee Wee" Johnson is 5 assists away from reaching 1,000 for her WNBA career...she will become the first player in league history to score more than 2,500 points and hand out 1,000 assists for her career...Sacramento's Ticha Penicheiro, Houston's Dawn Staley and former New York Liberty and Los Angeles Sparks' guard Teresa Weatherspoon all have over 1,000 assists, but none of them have cracked the 2,000 point plateau.
FEENSTRA MAKING A RUN AT ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Katie Feenstra has been one of the most consistent players all season long for the Silver Stars...she is San Antonio's fifth leading scorer (9.0 ppg) and second leading rebounder (5.2 rpg)...for the season she has scored in double figures 13 times and has led the team in scoring eight times...she has also pulled down 10 or more rebounds in two games and has led the Silver Stars in rebounding ten times.
