Silver Stars waive second-year guard Atunrase

SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Silver Stars waived second-year guard Morenike Atunrase and signed former Texas State standout Joyce Ekworomadu to a training camp contract, Head Coach and General Manager Dan Hughes announced today.

"We appreciate all Morenike did for the Silver Stars and wish her the best in the future," said Hughes.

Last season, Atunrase played in 33 of the Silver Stars' 34 games, averaging 2.2 points and 1.5 rebounds in 10.5 minutes per game. She was a standout at Texas A&M, averaging 10.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game as a senior. She is the school's all-time leading shot-blocker with 176 career blocks, which ranks her sixth all-time in the Big 12 Conference.

Prior to joining the Silver Stars, Ekworomadu played four games for LKS Siemens AGD Lodz in the Polish Liga Koszykowki Kobiet, the Polish women's basketball league. She averaged 8.3 points and 3.0 rebounds in 24.3 minutes per game.

Ekworomadu is a former Texas State standout where as a senior she averaged 18.7 points per game, second-best in the Southland Conference. She's just the fifth player in the program's history to amass 1,500 points and 600 rebounds. Ekworomadu also spent time with the Silver Stars during their 2008 training camp, appearing in preseason games against Houston and Detroit.

The Silver Stars open the 2009 season on the road at Phoenix June 6 before coming home to host the New York Liberty for the home opener and 2008 Western Conference banner unveiling on June 13 at the AT&T Center.
