San Antonio Stars News Release
SAN ANTONIO â San Antonio Silver Stars Chief Operating Officer Clarissa Davis-Wrightsil announced today the Silver Stars roster for the remainder of the 2004 season. At the same time the Silver Stars put Agnieszka Bibrzycka on the suspended list and placed Jocelyn Penn on injured reserve with right shoulder tendonitis/bursitis.
After a successful rookie season with the Silver Stars, Agnieszka âBiba' Bibrzycka returned to Poland on August 30 to fulfill her obligations with the Polish National Team. San Antonio signed the 2003 European Player of the Year with the understanding that she would be returning to Poland in September while she played for the Polish National Team in the 2005 European Championship for Women Qualifiers. For the season Bibrzycka played in 24 games with nine starts, averaging 6.6 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game. Bibrzycka is scheduled to return to the Silver Stars for the 2005 season.
"When we signed âBiba' we knew about her situation with the Polish National Team," Davis-Wrightsil said. "At the time we felt that âBiba' was a promising player, and indeed she is. We thought by signing her then, it would be the best way to secure her for the future for this team with the Silver Stars."
During the Olympic Break San Antonio signed free agents Nevriye Yilmaz and Penn. Yilmaz, a 6'4" center, has spent the majority of her professional career playing overseas. In 2003 she made her WNBA debut playing in five games for the Phoenix Mercury where she averaged 2.8 points in 6.8 minutes per game. Penn, a 6'0" guard, spent the 2003 WNBA season with the Washington Mystics. She appeared in 30 games, averaging 2.9 points and 1.7 rebounds in 9.6 minutes per game.
San Antonio also made some coaching changes during the break. Shell Dailey made the jump form assistant coach to interim head coach for the second time in two seasons on August 10. The move came after Dee Brown resigned as head coach on July 30. Last season Dailey led the Silver Stars to a 6-6 record after Candi Harvey was relieved of her coaching duties. Dale Osbourne is back as an assistant coach with the Silver Stars. Last season he joined Dailey on the bench during the Silver Stars' final 12 games.
The Silver Stars return to action on the road in Los Angeles on September 1 at 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised locally on WB-35. Fans can also tune in and listen to all of the team's 2004 WNBA games on Clear Channel radio stations Ticket 760 AM and KSJL 810 AM with Andrew Monaco calling the action.
The Silver Stars return home on September 4 to take on the Sacramento Monarchs at 7:00 p.m. inside the SBC Center. Prior to tipoff the Silver Stars will honor 2004 Olympic Gold Medalists' Shannon âPee Wee' Johnson and Yolanda Griffith of the Monarchs during a pregame ceremony. Johnson's gold medal and uniform will be on display throughout the evening. Following the game âPee Wee' will participate in an "Inside the Huddle" presented by H-E-B to share Olympic experience.
