Chico Outlaws News Release
RENO, NV - An error that led to two unearned runs in the 7th inning proved to be the difference Friday night at Peccole Park in Reno, as the host Silver Sox spotted Chico a 2-0 lead, then came back to take a 4-2 decision from the visiting Outlaws, knotting up the season-opening three-game series at one win apiece.
Chico, which handed Reno a one-run defeat in the season opener, jumped out early with a pair of 2nd inning runs off Silver Sox starter Nick Moran - with one out, Todd Gossage singled to center and two batters later Jesse Kovacs drew a walk; with Ricky Bambino at the plate, Moran uncorked a wild pitch to put both runners in scoring position...Bambino then delivered a base hit to center to knock in Gossage and Kovacs and give the Outlaws a 2-0 lead. Bambino's single would turn out to be the last hit Chico could muster until the 9th inning.
Chico starter Steve Jones kept Reno off the board through the first four innings - striking out five of seven batters at one point - but tired in the 5th, walking Mike Done and then with two out surrendering a home run to Victor Hall that tied the game at 2-all. The Outlaws, though not collecting any hits, had plenty of baserunners thanks to walks, hit batsmen and errors, but stranded six runners from the 3rd through the 8th innings - five of them in scoring position. The Silver Sox pushed across what turned out to be the winning runs in the bottom of the 7th off Chico reliever Jake McLintock - Done tripled and Hall drew a two-out walk, stealing second with Travis Tully at the plate. Tully then sent a hard one-hopper to short that Jesse Kovacs couldn't corral...the error allowed both Done and Hall to come home and give Reno a 4-2 advantage. Silver Sox relievers Josh Evans and Marshall Plouffe shut down the Outlaws the rest of the way, and despite a pinch double by Jason Matteucci and an infield single by David Pierson in the 9th, the Outlaws rally fell short and the Silver Sox posted their first win of the season.
Evans (1-0) got credit for the win in relief for Reno, with Plouffe notching his first save of the season...McLintock (0-1) took the loss for Chico. Hall and Done were each 2-for-3 at the plate to pace the Silver Sox, while the Outlaws managed just four hits on the night. The series rubber match is scheduled for Saturday night at Peccole Park, with left-hander Derrick Loop on the mound for Chico...Reno will counter with righty Keaton Everitt. Game time is 7:00pm...catch all the action with Rory Miller beginning at 6:35pm with the Outlaws pre-game show on SportsFan 101.7 FM ESPN radio.
