Silver Knights Escape with 2-1 Victory over Rox
July 15, 2012 - Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL)
Old Orchard Beach News Release
Brockton, Mass. - Norton native Sean Ryan (Wheaton) reached base in all of his five plate appearances on Sunday, but it wasn't enough for the Brockton Rox, who fell to the Nashua Silver Knights, 2-1, at Campanelli Stadium in Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL) action.
For the fourth time this season, Nashua (25-7) knocked off Brockton (15-15) by just one run. The Silver Knights remain locked into first place in the FCBL standings, while the Rox dropped into a tie for fifth place with the Martha's Vineyard Sharks.
After an infield single from Mansfield's Rhett Wiseman (Vanderbilt) kick-started Brockton's offense in the third inning, Ryan came away with a clutch RBI single to score Wiseman and give the Rox an early, 1-0, lead.
Ryan spearheaded Brockton's offense with a 4-for-4 performance at the dish that included two singles, a double, a walk, an RBI, and two stolen bases.
Brockton held the lead until the sixth, when James Katsiroubas (UMass-Lowell) blasted a solo home run over the left field fence to tie the game at one. Keeping the momentum alive, the Silver Knights loaded the bases that same inning and eventually scored on a run on a wild pitch to take a 2-1 lead.
After six strong innings from Travis Terrill (Merrimack), Nashua's bullpen kept the Rox off the scoreboard through the remainder of the game to seal the win.
Terrill (2-0) scattered one run on seven hits, while walking two and striking out one. Meanwhile, Cole Warren (Rhode Island), Matt Olsen (Stonehill), and Cody Rocha (Assumption) combined to allow just one hit and two walks in three shutout innings of relief, with Rocha earning his sixth save of the season along the way.
Brockton starter Vito Perna (Southeastern Louisiana) departed after just two scoreless innings of work, despite allowing just one hit and two walks. He was relieved by Norton's A.J. Bashaw (New Jersey Institute of Technology), who in 3.2 innings conceded two runs on three hits and two walks in the loss (0-1).
Frank Fantino (Southern New Hampshire) and Kyle Capaldo (Fairfield) combined to surrender just three hits and two walk and 2.1 solid innings out of the bullpen for the Rox.
Rays Roman (Dakota State) went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases to lead the Silver Knights at the dish, while Connor Lyons (Northeastern) added a pair of hits and a run scored as well.
The Rox head to Old Orchard Beach to face the Raging Tide on Monday night at 6 p.m. The Silver Knights are off until Tuesday, when they hit the road to face the North Shore Navigators at 7 p.m.
