SIFL Monday After: Bartik Now .500 In Inaugurals
April 20, 2009 - Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL) News Release
Bo Bartik got a second chance to make a first impression Saturday.
The veteran indoor football quarterback for the Acadiana Mudbugs made the most of his second appearance in a football league's inaugural game when the Mudbugs played the Austin. This time, he won it with four touchdown passes in a 37-29 victory to kickoff play in the Southern Indoor Football League.
Two years ago, Bartik was on the short side of a 49-47 setback when he quarterbacked the Daytona Beach Thunder against the Augusta Spartans in the first-ever game of the now-defunct World Indoor Football League.
``Thing is, we were good enough that day to win and we lost in the final minutes,'' Bartik said. ``I'm glad we got a win this time to get this team off to a good start. I've been around the sport long enough and know what to expect.''
Ironically, Bartik's redemption came on the turf previously owned by Daytona Beach. The Turfcats purchased all of Daytona Beach's inventory earlier.
``About time something good happened to me on that field,'' said Bartik.
HAYES HITS HIGHS AGAIN
A four touchdown game on opening day was just another game for Texas Pirates running back Roland Hayes.
This is Hayes' fourth season playing the sport. In three seasons with the Beaumont Drillers of the NIFL and APFL, Hayes totaled 94 rushing touchdowns. He's had numerous 5 TD games and a personal high of seven (six rushing, one return) in a 2006 contest against the Wyoming Cavalry.
``Football is football,' ' Hayes said. ``Doesn't matter where you're playing or what game it is, your job is to get the ball into the end zone.''
Hayes enjoys being the veteran for the first-year team.
``We have a lot of young guys, so I'm glad to lend my experience,'' said Hayes.
NOTES: Of the 19 touchdowns scored on opening weekend, six came on special team or defensive returns ... Acadiana and Texas' defense registered first-quarter shutouts while Houma used a third-quarter shutout to get back into contention.
