Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Tucson, AZ â The Sidewinders took their off-season community outreach program to the next level in 2004 when the inaugural Winter Caravan rolled through Southern Arizona on Wednesday-Thursday, January 28th-29th. The unparalleled event by a professional sports team in Southern Arizona was met with a tremendous amount of success and brought good cheer to community area hospitals, schools, military bases, and community centers.
On Wednesday LHP's Mike Gosling and Chris Cervantes, RHP's Andrew Good and Casey Daigle, as well as manager Chip Hale kicked off the tour with the troops at Ft. Huachuca Military Base, where they participated in a hitting demonstration, signed autographs, played catch with junior high students from the base, and joined the troops for lunch. Also on Wednesday, the Caravan visited community members at Rio Rico/Nogales and Green Valley where they interacted in question and answer sessions and prize giveaways.
On Thursday OF Doug DeVore, 1B/C Alan Zinter, 1B Steve Neal, RHP Jeremy Ward, and 2002-03 manager Al Pedrique accompanied Hale when the Caravan made six stops around the Tucson area. Day 2 of the tour visited Hohokam School, Sunnyside High School, the PÃo Décimo Center, VA Hospital, Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, and the pediatrics wing of Tucson Medical Center.
The Caravan traveled over 400 miles, met approximately 2300 people, and gave away more than 1600 gifts in the form of t-shirts, team photos, backpacks, bats, baseballs, souvenir programs, baseball cards, and bobble-head baseball dolls.
The Sidewinders plan on making the successful Winter Caravan an annual event. "The Caravan plays a key role in our outreach efforts throughout southern Arizona by thanking the wonderful communities for their support of the Sidewinders," said Sergio Pedroza, Sidewinders Director of Community Relations and Winter Caravan Coordinator.
