COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. â The Pacific Coast League today recessed a special meeting of its Board of Directors to address the state of the Portland Beavers franchise. The meeting, which included the appointment of two key positions to the franchise in an attempt to again make the Beavers a viable member of the league, will resume Monday, Feb. 9 at 9 a.m. (PST).
"There are no easy solutions to the scenario facing us," said PCL President Branch B. Rickey. "The PCL Board recessed in order to give further consideration to resolutions under development in an effort to avoid franchise rescission. There are many good people hard at work endeavoring to cure this very tough situation."
To stabilize the current business operations of the club, the PCL today approved the appointment of Tom Lasley as Interim President and Jack Cain as Acting General Manager.
"Both men have considerable local ties and the respect of the market among Portland Industry," said Rickey. "We are pleased to have leaders of their savvy and enthusiasm involved in bringing a positive result and will help ensure 2004 is a successful season in Portland."
The Pacific Coast League, comprised of 16 teams affiliated with Major League Baseball clubs, is one of two Triple-A Baseball leagues. Its 102nd consecutive season begins play on Thursday, April 8.
