Sidekicks Win 9-2 over Monterrey

DALLAS - The Sidekicks opened the 2003-04 Major Indoor Soccer League season with a 9-2 win over the Monterrey Fury in front of 6,013 fans at Reunion Arena.

Dallas built the lead quickly with six unanswered goals in the first 19 minutes of play. David Doyle led the Sidekicks with four points on a goal and three assists. Beau Brown and Kiley Couch each had two scores and one assist.

Nick Stavrou started the Dallas scoring when he took a pass from Patrick Shamu at 4:58 of the opening quarter. Brown scored 25 seconds later on an assist from Doyle for the 2-0 lead. The Sidekicks second scoring spurt started when Kiley Couch found the net at 11:14, also on a Shamu assist. Then Fabinho scored on a Doyle assist at 14:21 of the first quarter to give Dallas a 4-0 advantage after one period.

Brown and Couch also scored close together in the second stanza. Brown tallied off Doyle's third assist at 2:39 before Couch hit the target at 3:58. Brown closed his scoring for the game on the assist to Couch.

The first goal in Fury history came next as Genoni Martinez scored on a penalty kick at 7:19 of the second. Martinez got the shot after Sidekicks' goalkeeper Sagu was called for tripping inside the penalty arc during a battle for a loose ball. Martinez placed the ball to the lower right past Doyle, who was the Dallas keeper with Sagu in the penalty box.

Dallas finalized a 7-1 halftime lead when Doyle scored his lone goal at 11:10 of the second period. Doyle took a pass from Ricardinho and drove the ball into the upper right corner past two defenders and the Monterrey keeper, Christian Guemez.

The second half saw only three goals. Marco Lopez scored Monterrey's second goal on an assist from Armando Valdivia at 4:26 of the third quarter. Both Monterrey goals came on the power play. Dallas rookie Shaun David scored his first career goal at 7:02 of the third. Leo Pernia followed with the Sidekicks final goal at 9:42 of the fourth. Pernia scored on a breakaway after Frank Filo fed him from the defensive zone.

The Sidekicks are now 9-2 when opening the season at home. Dallas hosts Monterrey at Reunion Arena Sunday at 6:05 p.m. Coverage on KSKY 660 AM begins at 5:50 p.m.
