St. Louis Steamers News Release
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis Steamers goalkeeper, Brett Phillips has been awarded the MISL Goalkeeper of the Week following his 4-0 shut out of the Chicago Storm on Saturday night (Feb. 4th). Phillips, an MISL All-Star, made eight saves on the night keeping the Storm out of the net for the first time in Chicago's franchise history. It is the fourth time this season that Phillips has earned the award, which leads all keepers in the MISL. The win along with a loss by the Milwaukee Wave in Baltimore ties the Steamers and Wave atop the MISL standings, setting up a showdown this Sunday afternoon.
Phillips played all but 2:14 seconds of the game thanks to receiving a blue card for tripping and serving two minutes in the penalty box. Back up Bayard Elfvin served formidable in his absence facing one shot and making a save in the process. When Phillips returned to the game, it was more of the same turning aside everything that came his way.
Phillips was helped by the stingiest defense in the MISL as the Steamers are now allowing a league low 4.47 goals per game and only 18.11 shot on goal per game, also tops in the league. The defense was led by defender D.J. Newsom, who blocked three Storm shots. The Steamers defense blocked a total of five shots on the night, allowing Phillips the opportunity of a shut out. Following the game, Steamers owner Michael Hetelson awarded Phillips with a game ball in the locker room.
This is an MISL-leading fourth award for Phillips, 37, who also won the award on Nov. 28th, Dec. 19th and Dec. 27th. The performance is the first shut out of the season in the MISL and Phillips's second of his professional career which began in the 1992-93 season. The other occurred in the WISL in 2001. A native of Tampa, Fla., Phillips leads the MISL in wins (11), winning percentage (.786), and is second with his 4.60 goals against average.
Phillips, along with forwards Shaun David and Jamar Beasley along with Head Coach Omid Namazi will be in Milwaukee Saturday night for the MISL All-Star game. A collection of MISL All-Stars will be taking on the Mexican Federation National Team, which includes Mexico City native and Steamers defender Genoni Martinez. Namazi will serve as co-coach with Milwaukee Wave Head Coach Keith Tozer. The following afternoon (2:35 pm), the Steamers will take on the Wave for the rights to sole possession of first place. After the weekend's games, both teams had identical records of 13-4 while the Steamers currently own the tiebreaker. The game will take place in Savvis Center where St. Louis is 8-0.
