Three Things You Need to Know
1.) All-American Weekend- The Allen Americans are the lone CHL club to make it through opening weekend without a blemish beating the Arizona Sundogs 4-0 on Saturday night and 4-3 in a shootout on Sunday afternoon (the Americans have now won six straight regular season games in the AEC dating back to the end of last year). Allen's four points have them atop the Berry Conference after just two games with a 2-0 record. Steve Silverthorn won both games in net for the Americans making 30 saves in Saturday's shutout and 26 saves in the Sunday win. Forward Adam Pineault leads the offense with two goals and two assists. Allen faces their cross-town rivals, the Fort Worth Brahmas, on Friday and Saturday at the NYTEX Sports Centre.
2.) Offensive Explosions- Opening weekend in the CHL saw some strong offense with 64 total goals scored in the eight games (an average of eight combined goal per game). In last season's 11 opening weekend games, the teams collectively scored 59 goals. Both Missouri and Wichita scored 11 goals over opening weekend and Bloomington and Denver each scored nine goals. Of the 64 goals scored this past weekend, 16 of them came on the power play. Teams went 16 for 71 with the man advantage, good for a 22.5% success rate. On Saturday night in Denver, Missouri beat the Cutthroats 8-5 as the two clubs combined to score 13 goals.
3.) Six Packs- A trio of players made it through opening weekend with six points tying for the league lead in points. Denver's A.J. Gale leads the league with four goals to go along with his two assists, while Missouri's Jeff Pierce had three goals and three assists and Wichita's Matt Summers had two goals and four helpers. Pierce's solid weekend earned him the first Oakley CHL Player of the Week Award. The Oakley CHL Goaltender of the Week will be announced on Tuesday afternoon.
By the Numbers
9: The high for number of shots on goal recorded in a single game so far this season with Denver's Kyle Quincey (Detroit Red Wings) and Arizona's David Schlemko (Phoenix Coyotes) tying for the honor. The duo joins Arizona forward Kyle Chipchura (Phoenix Coyotes) as NHL players currently playing in the CHL during the NHL's lockout.
One-Timers
-Having the lead after 40 minutes proved to be critical on opening weekend as eight times teams held leads after two periods and in all eight instances, the team with the lead won.
-Opening weekend in the CHL saw 33,881 fans enter CHL arenas with an average of 4,235 per game. The high mark was set by the Wichita Thunder who brought in 6,554 fans on Saturday night in an 8-2 win over the Tulsa Oilers. Wichita drew 11,936 combined fans during their first two games.
-Tulsa's 4-3 win in Wichita on Friday night ended an 11-game losing slide for the Oilers away from home. Arizona also entered the 2012-13 season with 11 straight road losses and they failed to top the Americans in their two games in Allen extending their slide to 13 straight road losses.
-The Arizona Sundogs led all CHL teams in power play chances with 13 over opening weekend but they were the only CHL club that failed to score a power play goal. Arizona's defenseman David Schlemko did score the only shorthanded goal in the CHL though in Sunday's shootout loss to Allen.
-Missouri forward Sebastien Thinel had a goal and four assists during the Mavs first two games moving him past Riley Nelson into sixth place on the CHL's all-time scoring list. Thinel's 734 career points are 90 behind fifth place Chris Richards (824).
-Wichita rebounded after a tough opening night loss to the Tulsa Oilers by pinning eight goals on Tulsa in Saturday night's rematch. The Thunder scored five goals in the second period and scored eight straight times after Tulsa took a 1-0 lead. Gregor Hanson, Matt Summers and R.G. Flath each had four points in the game for Wichita.
