Three Things You Need to Know
1.) Here Comes the Rush- Putting together a win streak had been something the Rapid City Rush (28-21-5) had been unable to do all season long never winning more than two straight games. But the Rush now seems to be peaking at the right time sitting on their longest win streak of the season, four games. Rapid City has moved up to fourth place and is just six points behind Fort Worth for third place. Rapid City's four-game win streak saw them beat Bloomington three straight times last week outscoring the Blaze 12-6. Danny Battochio won three of the four games stopping 75 of 79 shots against. The Rush will look for five in a row when they host Quad City (22-23-6) on Tuesday night and then they head to Arizona (24-24-5) for a pair of games this weekend.
2.) Allen Keeps Hold of First Place- After all the drama and jockeying for position last week with the league's top three teams, the Allen Americans (31-13-9) are still in first place thanks to big showdown wins on Friday night against Wichita (30-16-7) and Sunday afternoon against Fort Worth (31-17-6). The Americans entered last week with a two point lead over Fort Worth and a three point lead over Wichita and despite a loss to Wichita on Tuesday and a loss in Fort Worth on Saturday, Allen saw their leads increase to three points over Fort Worth and four points over Wichita. There should be more drama this week as the Americans and Brahmas meet in the last game of their three-game series on Tuesday night in Allen and the Thunder come visiting the Allen Event Center on Friday night.
3.) Mavs Streak Towards Top Four- The Missouri Mavericks (28-19-4) have won three straight games and are coming off back-to-back extra time wins beating a pair of teams ahead of them in the standings in Fort Worth on Friday night in overtime and Wichita on Saturday night in a shootout. The Mavs are now just one point behind Rapid City for fourth place in the conference and are seven points behind third place Fort Worth. Missouri's game on Tuesday against Denver has been postponed due to bad weather in Denver and Independence and has been rescheduled for Wednesday, March 13. Forward Colt King has scored goals in five straight games (six goals over that stretch) and is one game shy of the longest goal streak in the CHL this season (Jesse Dudas - six games). The Mavs penalty kill has not allowed a power play goal in the last three games (10 for 10) which is a positive sign as they are last in the league wit h a 78.2% PK.
By the Numbers
1:44: The amount of time it took in the beginning of the third period for the Rapid City Rush to erase a 3-2 deficit against the Bloomington Blaze en route to a 6-4 win. Jarrett Konkle, Jesse Schultz and Winston Day Chief all scored even strength goals in less than two minutes extending the Rush's win streak to four straight games and it gave them their fifth win in 20 games that they trailed heading into the third period (5-14-1).
One-Timers
-Arizona forward Jason Morgan is slated to play in his 1,000th career game on Tuesday when the Sundogs host the Tulsa Oilers. Morgan has 12 goals and 24 assists on the season for Arizona.
-Bloomington's three straight losses to Rapid City has seen them fall to eighth place in the conference just two points ahead of ninth place Quad City. The Mallards have one game in hand and will play that game on Tuesday in Rapid City where a regulation win will put the Flock in a tie for eighth place.
-Denver's Mikael Bedard scored a pair of goals in a game for the third time since joining the Cutthroats and has been on a torrid pace scoring seven goals with three assists in five games. He has already surpassed his seven point total (3-4=7) in 15 games with Arizona earlier in the season.
-Missouri forward Sebastien Thinel is riding a five-game point streak and his CHL points lead has stretched to nine points over second place Jon Booras (24-43=67). Thinel has a goal and six assists during his win streak and the two-time CHL points champion has 22 goals and 54 assists on the season (76 points). The veteran also is second in the CHL with a +24 plus/minus rating, the highest of his 10-year career.
-The Quad City Mallards topped the Denver Cutthroats in an 11-round shootout on Friday night (tied for the longest shootout in the CHL this season). It marked the second time this season that the Flock has gone 11 rounds in a shootout this season (Nov. 2nd at BLM).
