December 9, 2013 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
Three Things You Need to Know
1.) Late Game Heroics- There were plenty of late game fireworks in the CHL this past weekend with eight of the 12 games between Friday and Sunday decided by one goal. On Sunday, the Quad City Mallards had things going against them as they were trailing 2-0 in the game before rallying to tie the score. Then in the final minutes, they would be shorthanded but with just 27 seconds remaining in regulation, Gergo Nagy scored a shorthanded goal giving the Flock a 3-2 win over Brampton. The Missouri Mavericks saw both sides of the equation as Wichita's Jon Booras scored a third period goal on Friday night lifting his team to a 2-1 win in Missouri but then on Saturday, the Mavs turned the tables with a third period goal from Andrew Courtney that gave them a 2-1 win over Arizona. But the biggest fireworks came on Friday night when the visiting Rapid City Rush stung the Allen Americans with a 3-2 win thanks to a t ip-in by Konrad Reeder off a Sean Erickson blast with just five seconds remaining.
2.) Moving On Up- The Tulsa Oilers (13-9-2) appeared before the season to be a deep team and they have shown that fighting through some injuries and a busy schedule to move their way to near the top of the standings. The Oilers have played three games in three nights in three of the last four weekends in those games have gone an amazing 8-1. This after their three game sweep this past weekend beating the Arizona Sundogs on Friday and Sunday and the Wichita Thunder on Saturday. Tulsa has played a league-high 24 games but now thanks to seven wins in their last 10 games, find themselves in second place just four points behind the conference-leading Rapid City Rush (16-2-0). On Nov. 2, the Oilers were 0-5-2 with six of those losses by one goal, but that start built some confidence that led to a four-game win streak and a 13-4-0 mark since. Tulsa travels to Brampton to play the Beast (11-10-1) on Thursday, Fr iday and Sunday.
3.) Beast Return Home- The Brampton Beast (11-10-1) return home after the biggest journey any CHL team will take this season, 11 straight games on the road. The Beast return relatively unscathed with a 5-6-0 record but a loss in the final minute of regulation on Sunday in Quad City will not sit well. Brampton started their journey back on November 15th in Allen, a 5-3 loss, and 23 days later ended it in Moline. Brampton was outscored 40-30 on their trip but after a 1-3 start, rallied to win four of their last seven games. Jason Pitton has five goals over his last 10 games and Rob Collins has 11 points (4-7=11) in his last nine games. The Beast will play six of their next eight games at home (4-2-0 this season) beginning with Tulsa on Thursday night.
By the Numbers
20: The number of goals that Denver's Garett Bembridge has scored this season leading the CHL. The veteran forward scored two goals in each of the Cutthroats games this past weekend in St. Charles and now has six multi-goal games this season (most in the CHL). The forward has never gone more than two games without scoring a goal and his seven power play goals and four game winning goals are both leading the league. Bembridge was named the Oakley Player of the Week on Monday.
One-Timers
-Allen defenseman Daniel Tetrault played in his 538th CHL game on Saturday moving him past Jason Tessier into the 20th spot on the league's all-time games played list. The veteran d-man has two goals and six assists for the Americans this season.
-Tulsa forward Michel Beausoleil scored goals in two of his team's three games this past weekend continuing his resurgent season. The veteran is tied for second in the league with 15 goals on the season coming in just 24 games. Last year, Beausoleil scored 20 goals in 64 games. His 210 career CHL strikes tie him with former teammate in Tulsa and Oklahoma City, Marty Standish, for 17th on the league's all-time list.
-The St. Charles Chill were tagged for a league season-high 114 penalty minutes in Saturday's game versus Denver (a 4-2 Cutthroats win). Anthony Pisano jumped to the league lead thanks to his 44 minutes in the game (96 on the season) and Andrew Conboy added 31 minutes. Pisano was suspended three games after the contest and Anthony Perdicaro was hit with a two-game suspension. The Chill are averaging nearly three more penalty minutes than any other CHL club.
-The Arizona Sundogs are proving to be a streaky bunch as they have followed their six-game win streak up with a five-game slide. Prior to their hot play, the "ÃËDogs went 0-7-1 over a three week period. Arizona plays at Missouri on Tuesday.
-The Wichita Thunder are carrying the league's top power play (21.3%) scoring 23 of their 57 goals on the season with the man advantage. On Friday, they take on the St. Charles Chill who own one of top penalty kill units stopping 83.3% (third in the CHL).
-The Quad City Mallards (9-3-5) have the third highest win percentage in the league at .676 and have now gone nine straight games earning at least a point. The Flock are 5-0-4 in their last nine and are an impressive 8-2-1 on home ice this season. The Flock will be tested this weekend when they travel to Rapid City for games on Friday and Saturday.
