December 13, 2013 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
Three Things You Need to Know
1.) Showdown in Texas- Two of the top teams in the CHL go head-to-head in a home-and-home series this weekend with the Missouri Mavericks (14-5-1) and Allen Americans (12-7-2) battling in Texas on Friday and then in Missouri on Saturday. The two teams are separated by just three points in the standings with the Mavs sitting in third place with 29 points and the Americans in fourth place with 26 points. Allen is 8-4-1 in the all-time series but this is the first showdown of the 2013-14 campaign. The Americans have just four wins in their last 10 games (4-5-1) and are 4-3-2 on home ice this season. The Mavs are 5-4-1 in their last 10 games and 7-3-0 in games away from home.
2.) No Slowing Down in Schultz- Rapid City Rush forward Jesse Schultz has been a huge catalyst in the team's 17-2 start to the season sitting with 31 points (8-23=31) on the season. The veteran is currently riding a league-best 15-game point streak with seven goals and 19 assists over that span. Schultz has scored at least a point in 18 of 19 games this season and dating back to the end of last season, has points in 44 of his last 47 games. Schultz ended last season on a 14-game point streak (9G, 11A) giving him points in 32 of his last 33 games. The Rush will have quite a battle this weekend when they host the Quad City Mallards (9-3-5) on both Friday and Saturday.
3.) A Look Back- There was a light schedule this week in the CHL but for the St. Charles Chill, they traveled west to face Rapid City on Tuesday and Denver on Wednesday. The Chill were defeated by the Rush on Tuesday by a 7-2 count but they rebounded against a nearly unbeatable at home Cutthroats squad to beat the Fish by a 3-1 score. Robert Moss made 42 saves earning the win for the Chill who won on the road for just the second time in nine games (2-6-1). Also on Tuesday, the Missouri Mavericks used two goals from Eric Castonguay and four assists from Sebastien Thinel to beat the Arizona Sundogs 5-1. On Thursday, the Tulsa Oilers and Brampton Beast kicked off a three-game series with the Oilers winning 6-4 behind a five-point night from Ben Gordon (3-2=5).
By the Numbers
6: The number of points that Tulsa's Todd Robinson has over his last four games recording two goals and four assists over that stretch. Robinson leads the CHL with 36 points (9-27=36) and had helped Tulsa to a 14-9-2 record, good for second place just four points behind the conference-leading Rapid City Rush (17-2-0).
One-Timers
-The Quad City Mallards have lost just once in their last 10 games going 5-1-4 over that stretch. The Flock have the third best win percentage in the league at .676 and go head-to-head with the conference-leading Rapid City Rush (17-2-0) this weekend in South Dakota.
-Missouri forward Colt King has been suspended seven (7) games for receiving a Match Penalty in the final minute of Tuesday's 5-1 in over the Arizona Sundogs.
-Tulsa's Ben Gordon recorded a natural hat trick on Thursday night in his team's 6-4 win in Brampton, a part of his five-point night (3-2=5) that has moved him up to third in the league's scoring race with 32 points.
-Brampton's home game on Thursday was their first since November 10 and with the loss, the Beast are now 4-3-0 on home ice. Tylor Michel scored twice for the Beats giving him four of his six goals on home ice.
-The Arizona Sundogs (7-14-1) are winless on their current six-game road trip that concludes with a pair of games in Denver this weekend. The Sundogs have been outscored 16-8 on their journey so far and are coming off a 5-1 loss in Missouri on Tuesday.
-After starting the year with four straight wins, Denver goalie Kieran Millan has hit hard times lately going 1-3-1 in his last five decisions. Over that stretch, the second-year pro has allowed 17 goals (allowed just eight goals during his four-game win streak). The Fish are still in the top half of the league with an 11-7-4 record and 26 points.
-Two teams looking for momentum meet tonight in St. Charles when the Chill (5-12-4) host the Wichita Thunder (6-12-4) in the first of two straight games between the two clubs. The Chill are coming off a road win in Denver on Wednesday and the Thunder have won three of their last four games overall.
