Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
KINSTON, NC: The Delmarva Shorebirds (2-12) ended a four-game losing streak on Saturday night as they shut out the Down East Wood Ducks (8-6), 6-0.
After a scoreless first two innings, Cole Urman broke the stalemate with his first career home run, sending a 3-0 pitch over the left field wall to give Delmarva the lead at 1-0.
They'd strike for a crooked number in the fourth, starting with a two-run double by Stiven Acevedo to score both Angel Tejada and Aron Estrada to make it 3-0. Doug Hodo would bring another run home for the Shorebirds with an RBI double of his own as he swapped spots with Acevedo, growing the advantage to 4-0. One more run would score in the inning on an RBI groundout by Brayan Hernandez, giving Delmarva a 5-0 lead after four.
Delmarva added another tally in the fifth on a two-out throwing error, allowing Thomas Sosa to touch home, making it a 6-0 game.
That would prove to be plenty for the Shorebirds' starting pitcher Michael Forret who delivered an encore after his winning effort last Sunday against Salem by tossing five more innings of shutout baseball, striking out a career-best eight batters.
Riley Cooper relieved Forret in the sixth and continued the trend of his starting pitcher by throwing four scoreless innings of his own, striking out four along the way to complete a 6-0 victory for the Shorebirds.
Michael Forret (2-1) earned his second consecutive victory with Riley Cooper (1) picking up the first save of his career. Down East starter Kolton Curtis (0-1) was saddled with the loss.
The Shorebirds will now look to close out the series with back-to-back victories on Sunday as Nestor German is scheduled to make his second start of the series versus David Davalillo for the Wood Ducks. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
