SAVANNAH, GA â The Delmarva Shorebirds (25-19) won their seventh game in a row this afternoon and completed a four game sweep of the Savannah Sand Gnats (18-25) winning 4-1 on Education Day at Historic Grayson Stadium. Shorebird starter John Maine (W, 5-1) picked up the win pitching six innings only allowing two hits and one run striking out eleven Sand Gnat hitters. The Shorebirds got on the board early in the first inning. With one out and a runner on first, center fielder Val Majewski tripled to the wall in right center giving Delmarva a 1-0 lead. The next hitter Randy Ruiz brought Majewski home on a sacrifice fly to center field giving the Shorebirds a 2-0 edge. The Sand Gnats would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth on Larry Broadway's ninth home run of the season making the score 2-1. However, Delmarva scored two more runs in the top of the seventh giving them the 4-1 advantage. For the Sand Gnats, Mike Hinckley (L, 3-2) took the loss pitching five innings allowing two runs on four hits and struck out eight. Broadway's homer ties him for first in the South Atlantic League. Shawn Norris was 2 for 3. Delmarva's Jeff Montani (S, 10) earned the save in relief pitching a scoreless ninth inning. Majewski was 3 for 5 with a triple, two doubles, two runs scored, and two RBI. Ruiz was 2 for 4 with a double and a RBI. The Sand Gnats will go on the road for three games against the Asheville Tourists beginning Wednesday, May 21 through Friday, May 23. The Sand Gnats will return home to face the Charleston (SC) RiverDogs for a three game series beginning Saturday, May 24. Saturday is Gulfstream Night. There will also be a post-game Memorial Day fireworks display presented by Piggly Wiggly and Cumulus Broadcasting.
