SPOKANE, WA (May 4, 2014) - Even with the loss of star quarterback Erik Meyer in the second quarter, the Spokane Shock (5-2) managed to pick apart the LA KISS (2-5) for a 70-21 victory on Sunday night in a nationally televised game.
Meyer, the reigning 2013 AFL MVP, went down with a shoulder injury midway through the second quarter and would not return. With no other active quarterbacks on the roster, the Shock turned to wide receiver Rashaad Carter to run the offense.
Carter finished the night 4-7 for 73 yards and two touchdowns through the air while adding 12 rushes for 46 yards and four touchdowns; the four scores on the ground tied the Shock single-game rushing touchdown record set by Meyer earlier this season.
Brandon Thompkins led the Shock receiving corps with 9 receptions for 93 yards and one touchdown while Adron Tennell added on 6 catches for 61 yards and three touchdowns.
The 21 points allowed by the Shock are the fewest given up in a single game in the franchise's five-year AFL history. The record-breaking defensive performance for Spokane was led by linebacker Terence Moore's six tackles and one interception.
Defensive linemen Jeremy Geathers and James Ruffin both recorded two sacks on the night; Ruffin is now tied with Jon Williams and current KISS linebacker Beau Bell for the Shock single-season sack record with 8.5.
The Shock opened up the game with decisive force, scoring the first four touchdowns of the contest to take a 28-0 lead before losing Meyer. Before he would exit the game Meyer completed 10 of 17 pass attempts for 89 yards and two touchdowns and rush three times for six yards and two touchdowns.
LA would not find the end zone until late in the second quarter, where back-to-back touchdowns would cut their deficit in half. A short pass from J.J. Raterink to Samie Parker and a missed field goal returned for a score by AJ Cruz would cut the Shock lead to 28-14 with 31 seconds remaining in the first half. However, the Shock would score twice in the final half minute of the second quarter, pushing their lead back out to four possessions. Carter found Thompkins for a 45-yard score and Tennell for a 13-yard score to close out the first half with a 42-14 lead.
The KISS opened up the second half with their final score of the game, a 15-yard touchdown pass from Raterink to Donovan Morgan to put the score at 42-21 in favor of Spokane. A series of defensive stops by the Shock and four Carter rushing touchdowns spanned the final two quarters of play and would seal the easy 70-21 victory for the Shock.
