SPOKANE, Wash. - The Shock opened their 2015 AFL regular season play on the road against defending ArenaBowl champion Arizona on Saturday, March 28 at the US Airways Center in Phoenix, AZ, falling to the Rattlers by a final of 60-43.
The Shock opened the game with a four-play drive capped off by a 25-yard touchdown pass from Carson Coffman to Mike Washington on a fourth down conversion to take the 7-0 lead. Arizona would respond with a three-play drive resulting in a 3-yard touchdown run by fullback Mykel Benson. The two rivals would trade scores on touchdown catches by Spokane receiver Mike Washington and Arizona receiver Kerry Reed, followed by a bar-ball recovery by the Rattlers resulting in a touchdown to end the first quarter with Arizona on top 21-13.
Spokane would begin the second quarter with another Coffman to Mike Washington touchdown pass, his third receiving score of the night. After Arizona responded on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Davila to Deadder with 8:52 left in the half, Arizona would strip the ball from Shock receiver Rashaad Carter and take over possession on the Spokane 22-yard line resulting in a 3-yard touchdown run by fullback Mykel Benson to extend the Arizona lead to 34-20. Spokane would respond with a six-play drive and score on a 3-yard run by Bryson Kelly and then would fail to recover the onside kick with 52 seconds remaining in the half. The Shock defense would hold Arizona on the short field to a field goal, but would fail to get in the end zone before the end of the half and would trail Arizona 34-20.
Arizona would open third quarter with a seven-play drive capped off by 3-yard touchdown pass on fourth down from Davila to Deadder. On Spokane's ensuring possession, now with back-up quarterback Jarrett Brown under center after Carson Coffman sustained a knee injury on the final play of the second quarter, the Rattlers would recover a fumbled snap and take over on the Spokane 23-yard line to set up another touchdown pass from Davila to Deadder and extend the Arizona lead to 50-27. Faced with a fourth down on the Arizona 10-yard line, Shock quarterback Jarrett Brown would scramble for a Spokane score before the Shock defensive lineman Derrick Summers would record a sack-safety on Arizona's next possession to close out the third quarter with the Rattlers leading 50-34.
Spokane would get the ball back following the safety and put together a five-play drive resulting in a 3-yard touchdown run by Bryson Kelly. Despite holding the Arizona offense to their second field goal of the game after the Rattlers were unable to punch it in from the two-yard line, Arizona would close out the game by intercepting Shock quarterback Jarrett Brown and score once more on a touchdown run by fullback Mykel Benson to close out the Arizona win at 60-43.
