Wichita Wild News Release
Wichita Wild all-purpose threat Jake Sharp was invited to participate in an individual tryout with the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League (UFL). Sharp is leaving the Wild immediately to prepare for the workout which will take place in early June. The UFL is an outdoor league and is considered to be the second highest level of pro football in America.
"We are all very happy for Jake. This is exactly why players compete at our level." Wild GM John Blazek says. "We want them to have the opportunity to move on."
Sharp made his biggest impact for the Wild as a kick returner and could fill that role for the Nighthawks. Sharp averaged 27.4 yards on 23 kickoff returns for the Wild this season. Sharp is third on the team in receptions with 23.
Sharp joined the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent in the summer of 2010 and was released prior to the season. Sharp left the University of Kansas in 2009 with the 10th most rushing yards in school history with 2,239. He finished his career with 23 rushing TD's which is 3rd all-time.
Sharp attended Central High School in Salina and left as one of the most heralded high school players in Kansas history. Sharp was named Gatorade Player of the Year in Kansas as a senior in 2005. Sharp ran for 6,524 yards in high school which is the second most in state history. Sharp was also a three-time state champion in the long jump.
The Wild are on the road this week to play the West Texas Roughnecks on Saturday with kickoff set for 7:05 pm. The game can be heard on 1330-AM KNSS with pregame coverage starting at 6:50 pm. Fans can also gather at Emerson Biggins West where the game will be broadcast on their big screen TV's. Emerson Biggins West is located at 2330 N Maize Rd. (21st and Maize) in Wichita.
