Sharks Win Again, Beating Titans 2-1

July 26, 2012 - Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL)
Old Orchard Beach News Release

The Martha's Vineyard Sharks continued their torrid streak beating the Torrington Titans 2-1 behind the combined outstanding pitching effort of Mike McFerran (sophomore, SUNY Oneonta) and Corey Laliberte (junior, Wheaton College). McFerran followed the stellar pitching performance of Joey Arenas (sophomore, C.W. Post), who pitched the previous night and also gave up only 1 run, as both became ad hoc starters as the Sharks head into the last two weeks of the collegiate regular baseball season. The Sharks have perhaps the best trio of starting pitchers in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League with Mike Bradstreet (junior, University of Rhode Island 6-0 and leading the FCBL in wins), Ryan Brocket (sophomore, St. Mary's College with an ERA 1.91) and Matt Doyle (sophomore, Harvard and leading the FCBL in ERA 0.30). Dan Weigel (sophomore, Bucknell University), who started the season as the ace of the staff, has won his last two games and is becoming the pitcher the Sharks thought they had lined up. Coach Ernie May (Trinity College) has performed a solid job of lining up his pitching for the last 15 games of the season that includes only one off day after today's All-Star game in Nashua, NH. McFerran pitched 5 innings allowing 1 unearned run and 2 hits, lowering his ERA to 1.69. Laliberte followed with four strong shutout innings, 2 hits and 3 strikeouts, lowering his ERA to 3.96.

Apo De La Cruz (freshman, Wheaton College) knocked in both runs. With runners on second and third with no outs the Sharks were ready for a big first inning. After the next two batters made out without moving the runners, De La Cruz came up with the two-out clutch hit bringing in both runs.

Tad Gold (sophomore, Endicott College, batting .312) and Jack Colton (sophomore, Harvard, batting .281) both had two hits in the game.

The Sharks have won ten of their last twelve games taking sole possession of 2nd place (nine out of their last ten games) to be the hottest team in the FCBL. The only negative over this hot streak is the defensive play, which so far has not hurt the Sharks, but must be cleaned up in order to make the playoffs and advance in the playoffs.

Next home game is Saturday against the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide @ 5:00 PM, followed by a special Sunday noon start against the Brockton Rox, which also happens to be a free hot dog lunch! Take in a baseball game with your Sharks, enjoy a free hot dog, then head to the beach!!

The 5-K race has been cancelled for Sunday.
