Sharks Ink New Head Coach

March 5, 2012 - Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL)
Old Orchard Beach News Release

The Martha's Vineyard Sharks announced the signing of Ernie May as the Sharks Head Coach for the 2012 baseball season. General Manager Jerry Murphy and Vice President of Operations Bob Tankard met Ernie in Dartmouth at the end of February and were extremely impressed. His philosophy of running a baseball team is very much in line with what they were searching for in a head coach. The team's previous hiring, Mike O'Malley, tendered his resignation before he had a chance to coach the team due to his acceptance of a full-time job outside of baseball.

The Sharks will be running personal clinics and group clinics this summer that will be supported by the players and Ernie's coaching staff, starting with free team clinics at three different fields on the Vineyard for the six major league teams in the Little League and for each team in the newly formed Junior League on Sunday June 10th.

Ernie has been an Assistant Coach at the University of Massachusetts (UMass) for 12 seasons and the former Head Coach at Division-I Wofford College, is entering his second season as an Assistant Coach with Trinity College in Connecticut. At UMass, May served as pitching, bench, first base and outfielders coach. Coaching at Wofford College from 1995-1999 he took the baseball program from Division-II to Division-I, competing in the Southern Conference, and led the team to a fifth-place finish in its first year of conference play.

May has also been an Assistant Coach at Springfield College and Thayer High School in New Hampshire. In 1990, May served as the general manager of the Class-A Pittsfield Mets of the New York-Penn League.

A native of Amherst MA, May graduated from Keene State College with a bachelor's degree in physical education and a minor in sport management. While at Keene State, he pitched and played first base for the Owls. May received his master's degree in physical education and sport management from Springfield in 1993. He resides in Glastonbury CT with his wife Justine.
