Sharks Fall Short at Lawton

March 18, 2011 - Premier Basketball League (PBL)
Rochester RazorSharks News Release

In a battle between the two highest scoring teams in the Premier Basketball League, the Lawton-Fort Sill Cavalry beat the Rochester RazorSharks 85-80. The shootout never materialized. Their point totals were the lowest of the season for both.

This was the last of four meetings between the playoff finalists of a year ago. LFS won three of them, but Rochester matched the Cavalry nearly shot for shot over the last three. The Sharks lost in overtime, won on a buzzer beater, and lost Friday night by five. It was the closest of the Cavalry's nine at home so far this season. Lawton-Fort Sill has never lost a home game in its two years as a member of the PBL.

Early on it looked like a blowout. The Cavs ran off to a 14-2 lead fueled by four early Rochester turnovers that led to seven LFS points. But the Sharks settled in, went on an 11-0 first quarter run and led at the first break 25-22.

In the second quarter Rochester led by as many as seven, but a late period breakdown cost them. Four free throws were sandwiched around a Brandon Dean steal in the final two seconds of the half. The Sharks lead was cut to 43-41.at break.

Elvin Mims scored ten of his game high 20 for the Cavs in the first eight minutes of the third quarter. Rochester responded by scoring eight of the final ten points of the quarter and trailed 65-64 after three.

A fourth quarter hoop by Melvin Council gave the Sharks an early 66-65 fourth quarter lead but it was the last time they were ahead. Lawton led the rest of the way but never by more than eight. Guard Eddie Smith scored the Cavs last eight points on his only field goal, and six for eight shooting from the foul line. Lawton held on for the 85-80 win.

LFS dominated inside outscoring Rochester 40-22 in the paint for the game, and had 17 second chance points to the Sharks' four. Rochester also turned the ball over 22 times.

Individually Council led the Sharks in scoring with 15 points. Fred Durr netted 14. Mike Williams had a game high 12 rebounds.

Lawton's Mims was high man with 20 points.

Rochester (10-8) has two games left. The Sharks are at Dayton (3-14) Tuesday and then home against Kentucky (5-13) Saturday March 26. A win in either clinches a playoff berth.

The Cavs (15-2) have three games remaining. They host second place Quebec (12-5) on Tuesday. An LFS win clinches the regular season championship.
