Sharks Defeat First Place Navigators 9 -1

June 28, 2012 - Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL)
Old Orchard Beach News Release

It is always nice to have an ace going every five days. Mike Bradstreet (junior, University of Rhode Island) definitely fits that moniker. Bradstreet pitched an efficient complete game 5-hitter against the league leading North Shore Navigators . The Navigators, who have an 11 -4 record, have been beaten by the Sharks twice this season. "This was an important game for the Sharks" according to General Manager Jerry Murphy as "we lost a tremendously pitched game against the Navigators the night before," as Ryan Brocket (sophomore, St. Mary's College in California) went 7.2 shutout innings for the Sharks, but lost in ten innings after taking the lead in the top of the tenth 2 -0. Murphy stated that "our starting pitching staff is starting to get itself in order and our closing duo of Matt Doyle (sophomore, Harvard) and Ryan Morris (junior, Presbyterian University) continue to be a shutdown tandem."

Bradstreet has been a revelation for the Sharks, especially consistency in his three starts. He leads the team in wins and has a miniscule ERA of 1.03. His complete game yesterday follows a "near" no-hitter that he pitched the last time out against the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs, but was removed after 7.1 innings before he could finish the game due to the Futures Collegiate Baseball League rules on pitch count. Prior to that game he beat the second place Nashua Silver Knights allowing 1 run and 5 hits over 8 innings. Murphy stated that "Bradstreet could be the best pitcher in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League this season." It would be difficult to argue with him on this point based on his first three starts of the season.

Tad Gold (sophomore, Endicott College) continues to pound the ball going 4 - 5, 2 runs scored and 1 RBI. His batting average is now leading the team at .381. Eric Jensen (junior, Wheaton College) climbed over the .300 mark going 3 - 5 with 3 RBIs and is now batting .314. The Sharks played flawlessly in the field while the Navigators made 4 errors.

The Sharks travel tonight to play the Nashua Silver Knights but return home Friday, June 29th to play seven consecutive home games (one non-league game against the British National Team that will be competing in the World Cup) with a much needed day off on July 4th where they will be part of the famous 4th of July parade in Edgartown. All games start at 5:00 PM @ Vineyard Baseball Park, with the gates opening at 4:00 PM. Friday night's game against the Brockton Rox is "Bark in the Park " featuring Mike Piazza (not the Mets catcher!) and his famous high flying Frisbee dogs. All dogs and owners get into Vineyard Baseball Park for free.
