Honolulu Sharks News Release
Four Honolulu pitchers combined to shut out Waikiki, 2-0, this afternoon at Honolulu's Les Murakami Stadium.
Sharks starter Johnny Venters (2-1) of the Atlanta Braves tossed five scoreless innings and scattered three hits while striking out five. Michael Broadway and Kaimi Mead combined to blank Waikiki through the next three innings, and Andy Graham nailed down the win in the ninth for his third save of the season.
Honolulu (13-5) scored both its runs in the third inning when Ruben Tejada scored on a Yuji Onizaki throwing error, and Tony Cruz singled in Michael Taylor from second base.
Cruz, a prospect with the St. Louis Cardinals, powered the Sharks offense with a game-high three hits, and improved his batting average to .432.
The BeachBoys (7-11) managed four hits on the afternoon, including a double apiece from Todd Frazier and Alex Garabedian, and a Tony Thomas Jr. triple.
Waikiki starter Mitsuo Yoshikawa dropped to 1-1 on the season after surrendering an earned run on five hits through five innings.
The two teams have tomorrow off, and return to action on Tuesday.
