Honolulu Sharks News Release
Honolulu broke a 23-inning scoreless streak that spanned three games with three runs in the top of the sixth inning as the Sharks stopped Waikiki, 4-1, tonight at Les Murakami Stadium.
With the win, Honolulu improved to 15-15 on the season, and pulled to within 1 ½ games of the BeachBoys' Hawaii Winter Baseball East Division lead.
The Sharks took the deciding lead in the sixth frame on a sacrifice fly from Tony Cruz that plated Ruben Tejada, and two additional runs came across when Waikiki reliever Steven Richard threw a ball meant for second base into center field.
Waikiki (17-14) brought a run home in the eighth inning as Austin Romine doubled with two out, and scored on Yonder Alonso's single to left field.
Purple-clad Honolulu added an insurance run in the ninth inning as Greg Veloz singled up the middle to plate Jim Rapoport, who led the Sharks with two hits on the evening.
Honolulu starter Scott Shaw (2-2) notched the victory, tossing five scoreless innings through which he allowed a hit and struck out six while lowering his earned run average to 1.91. Roy Merritt of the New York Mets picked up the four-out save, his first of the season.
Yuhei Takai (2-2) took the loss for Waikiki after surrendering three runs on four hits and striking out two through five innings.
The teams return to Murakami Stadium tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the finale of a three-game series.
