West Oahu CaneFires News Release
West Oahu pounded out 11 hits including two key home runs en route to a 7-5 victory and completed a three-game sweep of North Shore this afternoon at Waipahu's Hans L'Orange Park.
Logan Schafer paced the CaneFires with three hits and four RBIs while teammate Chris Hatcher chipped in three hits and scored three runs. The win gives West Oahu a 10-8 record overall, and a four-game lead over the Honu in Hawaii Winter Baseball's West Division.
Kenji Sato got the Honu (6-12) on the board in the second inning with an RBI double to deep center field that plated Yamaico Navarro.
But the CaneFires took a 2-1 lead in the home half of the frame on Schafer's two-run home run over the fence in right field with two out that scored Hatcher.
West Oahu added three runs in the fourth inning thanks to four consecutive hits to lead off the inning. Schafer and Haruki Kurose each had RBI singles in the frame, and Kyle Peter plated Schafer on a groundout to put the CaneFires ahead, 5-1.
Wally Crancer hit his first home run of the Hawaii Winter Baseball season, a solo shot in the fifth inning, to give West Oahu a five-run advantage. After Hatcher singled later in the frame, Schafer doubled him home to increase the CaneFires lead to 7-1 prior to North Shore's four-run ninth inning.
West Oahu starter Chris Salberg (1-0) notched the victory after allowing a run on two hits and striking out three through four innings.
Honu starter Jose Capellan (0-1) took the loss, surrendering five runs on six hits through three innings.
The two teams have tomorrow off, and return to action on Tuesday.
