Washington Kastles News Release
Four-time Wimbledon singles champion Serena Williams opens her 2012 campaign at the All England Club today against Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic.
Serena, seeded sixth, and Zahlavova Strycova are the second match scheduled on Court 2, and should begin play between 9 and 10 am DC time. Live online streaming will be available on ESPN3.com, with television coverage airing on ESPN2.
In their only previous meeting, Serena defeated Zahlavova Strycova 6-0, 6-4 to advance to the third round of this year's Australian Open. The fifth-year Kastle has won 17 of her last 18 singles matches at Wimbledon overall, including title runs in 2009 and 2010.
If Serena defeats Zahlavova Strycova today, the Kastles will be giving away an I LOVE DC tennis ball T-shirt to a lucky Twitter follower. All you have to do is retweet the post that includes the Serena vs. Zahlavaova Strycova result and you will be entered to win. A prize will be awarded every time a Kastle wins a singles or doubles match at Wimbledon.
Wimbledon began on Monday with new Kastle Anastasia Rodionova fighting hard before falling to World No. 1 Maria Sharapova 6-2, 6-3 on Centre Court. Rodionova broke Sharapova's powerful serve twice, but could not overcome 23 winners from the reigning French Open champion.
Venus Williams endured a similar result against another Russian, bowing out 6-1, 6-3 to Leander Paes ' mixed doubles partner Elena Vesnina. Both Venus and Anastasia will return to action later this week in the women's doubles draw.
