Chilliwack Bruins News Release
Chilliwack BC - 'It's all About Winning' was the theme of the 2nd Annual Chilliwack Rotary-Bruins Gala, this year held at the Abbotsford Ramada Conference Centre...and if you were in attendance on Monday night, you definitely would fall into that winning category. What a memorable evening!
After an opening address by Rotarian's Bill Coombes and Bruins Owner Darryl Porter, Bruins GM Darrell May and Bruins Coach Jim Hiller addressed the packed house. Once dinner was served and all of the Bruins players introduced, Global TV's sports anchor Squire Barnes took to the podium, adding to the festivities by talking about how the Bruins successes over the first two years had a lot to do with the Bruins ownership entrusting Darrell May with the hockey operations and May then translating his vision of the team into a success.
After Barnes' speech came a video tribute to the GALA's two stars, Bruins's co-owners, Hall of Famer and five time Stanley Cup Champion Glen Sather and defending Stanley Cup Champion and local favourite Brian Burke. Once the videos concluded, Burke, Sather and Barnes took to the stage and as Barnes moderated, Sather and Burke delighted the sold out crowd. As always, Burke and Barnes were great with the one-liners, with Sather throwing in some well timed barbs of his own. After 45 minutes of topics ranging from winning to the salary cap to what it takes to succeed as a player at that level, Burke and Sather took many questions from the audience. Questions that included Sather being asked, 'Who was the second best player you ever coached?' to Burke being asked, 'Are you moving to Toronto to be the Leafs GM?'
A live and silent auction were also held to raise money for the Chilliwack Bruins Education Fund and many pictures and autographs were handed out as Burke, Sather and Barnes put on a fantastic show.
'The Bruins have been blessed now for two straight years to have Brian Burke and Squire Barnes involved in this event,' enthused Bruins President Darryl Porter. 'To also have Glen Sather included in this event makes it unique and an over the top success. Glen and Brian both flew in to be here specifically for this event and we cannot thank them enough. It was a truly special evening.'
'This GALA does not get off the ground without the continued support of the Chilliwack Rotary,' mentions Barry Douglas, Bruins Director of Marketing. 'Bill Coombes and everyone involved with this event can take a bow, as this evening simply would not happen without the invaluable support of the Rotary.'
