SEATTLE - Seattle Sounders FC ended preseason play with a 3-1 victory over the 2010 MLS Cup champion Colorado Rapids behind two goals from Fredy Montero in the second annual Community Shield match on the Xbox Pitch at Qwest Field on Wednesday night.
With the victory Sounders FC finishes the preseason with a record of 5-4-2.
Montero's two goals came in the final 23 minutes, snapping a 1-1 tie. Five minutes after the Rapids had equalized, Montero scored after taking a one-touch from Erik Friberg. O'Brian White, who subbed in two minutes prior, also assisted on the score.
Montero's second goal came in the 78th minute as he sent a shot over a sliding Colorado goalkeeper, giving Sounders FC a 3-1 advantage that it held on to through full time.
After a scoreless first half, Seattle defender Jhon Kennedy Hurtado struck first in the 60th minute on a Montero free kick. Montero drove a ball into the box and Hurtado connected with a header past Colorado goalkeeper Matt Pickens.
Colorado's Jeff Larentowicz quickly responded in the 62nd minute after Hurtado was whistled for a foul inside the box, setting up a penalty kick. Larentowicz slid a right-footed shot past Sounders FC's Kasey Keller to even the score 1-1.
Former Sounders FC players Sanna Nyassi and Tyrone Marshall saw limited action for Colorado, both entering the match in the 71st minute.
The two teams finished with 12 shots a piece, but Seattle held a slight advantage in shots on goal (6-5). Colorado held the advantage in corner kicks (5-2).
All proceeds from the Community Shield match benefit the five Sounders FC community partners - America SCORES Seattle, Boys & Girls Club (King Co. & Bellevue), Special Olympics Washington, Washington Global Health and Washington Youth Soccer.
The regular season opens on Tuesday, March 15 with MLS First Kick 2011. Sounders FC hosts the L.A. Galaxy on the Xbox Pitch at Qwest Field in a match televised nationally on ESPN. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. PT.
