Seattle Sounders FC Forward Jordan Morris Voted MLS Player of the Week
March 4, 2019 - Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release
NEW YORK - Seattle Sounders FC forward Jordan Morris was voted the Major League Soccer Player of the Week for the first week of the 2019 MLS season.
In his first match since missing the entire 2018 season due to a torn ACL, Morris triumphantly returned to action with two goals in Seattle's 4-1 victory over expansion side FC Cincinnati at CenturyLink Field on Saturday. The 24-year-old academy product exited the match in the 77th minute to a standing ovation after recording his second career MLS brace. Morris is currently tied for the league lead with two goals scored after the opening week of the 2019 season.
A Washington native, Morris scored in front of his hometown fans in the 33rd minute to give the Rave Green its first lead of the match. Morris sent a right-footed shot from the left of the box, slightly deflecting off a Cincinnati defender into the back of the net to bring the score to 2-1 in Seattle's favor. Sounders FC teammates rewarded Morris with an emotional pile on celebration for the forward's first goal since August 2017.
The U.S. Men's National Team standout then extended Seattle's lead just before the half, finishing a wide open left-footed shot from inside the box into the upper 90 to give Sounders FC a 3-1 advantage in the 43rd minute.
Seattle returns to action on Saturday, March 9 when hosting the Colorado Rapids (10 p.m. ET., ESPN+).
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season through both media and fan voting in a process conducted by MLS Communications. A panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) comprises 75 percent of the vote, while a Twitter fan vote represents the remaining 25 percent of voting. NASR consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
