Florida Seals News Release
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Now this is the Florida Seals team that everyone has been waiting for.
Led by the two goal performance of Scott Corbett and another near shutout by Matt Balser in net, the Seals extended their winning streak to two games with a 9-1 victory over the Jacksonville Barracudas at the Silver Spurs Arena Tuesday night.
"It's nice. It's very comfortable. The guys have made me feel like one of the team right away," Corbett said. "It's nice to come into a situation where you can help out and I've been very fortunate so far."
Coming off a huge victory Saturday in Knoxville Tennessee, the Seals were feeling much better about themselves. They were pressing the action from the opening face-off and it finally paid off 4:49 in when Chad Haacke tipped in a Ryan Coghlan shot from the slot. Two minutes later, Justin Keller made a slick cross crease pass to Corbett who beat Cudas goalie Corey Wogtech cleanly.
Florida wasn't done. Two minutes after Corbett's tally, Steve Zoryk and Rob Sich broke in two-on-one with Zoryk whipping a wrist shot past Wogtech. Matt Meacham replaced Wogtech in net for Jacksonville but he fared no better. Late in the period, Phil Gianfrancesco was sent in alone and he drove a shot that Meacham couldn't completely control and watched it trickle home. Less than a minute later, Coghlan cashed in on a power play chance to give Florida an astounding 5-0 lead.
"It's been a long time coming. The boys have been working really hard lately," Zoryk said. "We had a great game tonight."
The barrage continued in the second. During an early penalty kill, Zoryk sent Tim Vitek in alone. Vitek made one fake and went high over Wogtech's stick shoulder. Two minutes after that score, Keller made fed Dan Pszenyczny from behind the net. Pszenyczny beat Wogtech to make the score Florida 7 Jacksonville 0. Corbett's second of the night came on a power play break away at the 6:42 mark of the stanza and was followed at 9:48 by Keller who turned a broken play into a 9-0 Seals lead.
All that was left was to try to get Balser the shutout. Jacksonville came out with nothing to lose and put an amazing 24 shots on net in the final period. Balser made several big saves, none better than a series of three or four during a Barracudas man advantage. The visitors finally spoiled the whitewash with 3:10 remaining when Jeff Angelidis beat Balser.
"The boys played great tonight. They made it easy for me to see all the shots," Balser who made 44 saves in the game, said. "The boys are making it easy for me to play."
The Seals have the next couple of days off before returning to the ice on Friday at the Silver Spurs Arena when the Fayetteville FireAntz make their first visit.
