Florida Seals News Release
[KISSIMMEE, Fla.]-A night after the Seals played one of their best games of the year; the Knoxville Ice Bears returned the favor, winning the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) championship. Three first period goals lifted the Ice Bears to a 3-2 victory.
Knoxville came out on fire with high-octane offense. Bob Rangus started his two-point night with the game's first goal at the 3:07 mark. Curtis Menzul, one of the SPHL's best defenseman threw the puck towards the Seals net. The puck hit goalie Terry Denike and rolled off him slowly into the net. With less than a minute remaining Kevin Swider scored a breakaway goal, proving to be the game winner.
The Seals would not quit. David Deeves worked hard on a penalty kill and created a two-on-one break shorthanded. Deeves delivered a perfect pass to Justin Keller who put it into the net.
Again in the third period the Seals worked hard early and brought the Silver Spurs Arena crowd to their feet. Steve Zoryk finally got a bounce he was looking for and buried his second goal of the playoffs. The fans kept trying to will the Seals to the tying goal, but it would never come.
The Knoxville win gives the Ice Bears their first franchise championship. It was the third time they have been in a Cup Finals.
The Florida Seals will return to the ice in October for their second season at the Silver Spurs Arena. For all the summer information and updates keep your computer logged onto www.floridaseals.com.
