Florida Seals News Release
[KNOXVILLE, Tenn.]- The Knoxville Ice Bears quest for their first championship started well with a 6-3 win over the Seals. The win gives Knoxville a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five President's Cup Finals.
Knoxville came out strong on their home ice scoring on an early power play. Doug Searle took a won Kevin Swider draw and shot it to the back of the net. The bounces continued for Knoxville as Marcus Forsberg redirected a Chris Kovalcik shot past Terry Denike.
The second period turned out much the same as the opening 20-minutes. The Ice Bears opened on the power play and Swider extended the home team's lead to three. Luck struck for Knoxville at the 12:16 mark. Mike Craigen won the draw to Rob Miller. Miller settled the puck at the red line and shot the puck at Denike who misplayed it into his own net.
Things got choppy near the end of the second period. Players started to get more physical after whistles and the pushing and shoving increased.
The Seals showed life scoring their first road power play goal of the playoffs. Craig Miller erased the goose egg from the scoreboard. Bret Peppler and David Deeves added late goals for the Seals, but it was not enough.
The same two teams will return to Knoxville's ice for Game 2 on Saturday night. The puck drops at the Knoxville Civic Center at 7:30 pm. Fans can hear the game on Talk Radio 1190 WAMT or www.wamt1190.com.
