Victoria Seals News Release
Aiming for their first road win of the season, the Victoria Seals closed out their six-game trip to Arizona with game three against the Yuma Scorpions on Sunday evening. With the Scorpions turning to former Major Leaguer Bill Pulsipher (1-1) on the mound, the Seals responded with an ace of their own in left-hander Jason Kershner (1-1).
The Scorpions were first to strike in the series finale, jumping on the board with three runs in the bottom of the first. A lead-off walk to Masjid Khairy set up a double from Lee Cruz and an RBI triple off the bat of Tim Rodriguez to cash in a pair. Capping off the first frame with a sacrifice fly, Santo De Leon made it 3-0 through one at Desert Sun Stadium.
Adding to their lead in the bottom of the second inning, a single from Johny Celis and an error to first basemen Terrence McClain allowed a fielder's choice RBI from Khairy to put Yuma up 4-0. After the starting pitchers combined for three scoreless frames, the Scorpions picked up a solo home run off the bat of Rodriguez to take a five-run advantage.
Responding to climb back into the game in the top of the seventh, the Seals got a lead-off home run off the bat of Josh Arhart broke a club-record streak of five games without a long ball, and put Victoria on the board. Back-to-back doubles from Dale Swinford and Chris Van Rossum, combined with a sacrifice fly courtesy of Wilver Perez pulled the Seals within two, a 5-3 score.
But Yuma then put the game and the series away in the bottom of seven, using a base hit from pinch hitter Eric Scriven to convert another pair of runs on an RBI single from Ron Perodin and a run-scoring groundout from Cruz to stretch their lead to 7-3. Unable to pitch a comeback attempt in the final two innings, the Seals drop a seventh consecutive game and suffer back-to-back sweeps in Arizona with a 7-3 final score.
Jason Kershner's tough first inning led to his second loss on the season, while Bill Pulsipher collects the victory despite being ejected in the seventh frame. Tim Rodriguez' 2-for-4, three RBI outing led the way for Yuma, while Dale Swinford and Chris Van Rossum both had two hits in a losing effort for the Seals.
