San Diego Loyal News Release
San Diego, CA - Today, the City of San Diego made their decision to move forward with the Brookfield+ASM Global Development proposal and grant them the ability to negotiate with the city to redevelop the Sports Arena site.
San Diego Loyal SC (SD Loyal), which had plans to build a modular soccer stadium under the opposing project, the Midway Sport and Entertainment District (MSED), issued the following statement as a response:
"Though the news from the city today felt like a punch in the gut, years being married to the sport of soccer has taught me that sometimes you can win on the field and not get the result that matters. I have also learned that tomorrow will come, and we will rise again," said SD Loyal President Warren Smith.
"Beginning today, we're doubling down on our efforts to ensure our club's goals and objectives are met and we will come up with an even better stadium solution for our growing fanbase. This club is and will continue to be a pillar in our community and the excitement from our fans give us the strength to push forward in making San Diego an even better place to live, work and play. I am so proud of the MSED team for the proposal we submitted and to have worked with such a passionate and talented group of people that led this charge."
SD Loyal would like to thank Toll Brothers, David Malmuth Development, Cruzan Development, BRIDGE Housing as well as their partners, collaborators, consultants, the soccer community and supporters for coming together to help create a project that would have undoubtably made for a better plan.
"I would also like to congratulate the Brookfield/ASM Global team on their winning of the competitive process and wish them success leading to the turnaround of the Sports Arena property," added Smith. "Lastly, I would like to thank the City of San Diego for allowing the
MSED team to participate in this process and bring fresh thoughts that will hopefully make for an even better project to be built there."
Fans are encouraged to stay connected in the safety of their own homes by downloading the official team app or signing up for updates and news via SDLoyal.com and #SDLoyal.
