Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release

(State College, PA) - The Mahoning Valley Scrappers and State College Spikes brought the big lumber to Medlar Field on Tuesday night. The two teams combined for 24 runs and 27 hits. Unfortunately for the Scrappers, the bullpen was unable to slow down the Spikes bats in the final few innings as State College score 10 runs over their final three at bats to pull away for a 13-9 win.

The Scrappers offense was paced early on by George Valeri. In the top of the first inning, Valeri opened the scoring with an RBI double. He added two more runs on a two run single in the top of the third inning. Valeri then capped his RBI total for the night with a three run homerun in the top of the fifth inning.

The Scrappers held a 6-3 lead when they turned the game over to the bullpen in the sixth inning. The Spikes bats would come alive at that point. State College would score a single run in the sixth inning before scoring three in the seventh and then breaking the game open with six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Carlos Vargas started and took a no decision. He allowed 3 earned runs in 5.0 innings of work. Vargas walked 1 and struck out 2. Francis Cespedes followed with 1.1 innings of work. He allowed 3 earned runs on 1 hit. Cespedes walked 4 and struck out 1. Juan Paredes (1-1) took the loss in 0.2 innings of relief. Paredes allowed 6 earned runs on 5 hits. He walked 1 and did not record a strike out. Luis Sanchez went the final inning in relief. He allowed 1 earned run on 1 hit. Sanchez walked 2.

The Scrappers (7-4) and Spikes continue their series on Wednesday night at Medlar Field. Liam Jenkins gets the start for Mahoning Valley. First pitch is set for 7:05. The Scrappers return home on Friday night to face the Batavia Muckdogs.
