Scorpions to Play International Friendly against Deportivo Saprissa
March 25, 2014 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
San Antonio Scorpions News Release
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Tuesday, March 25, 2014) - The San Antonio Scorpions will take on three time CONCACAF Champions Cup winners Deportivo Saprissa at 7:30pm on April 5th at Toyota Field in their final tune-up for the NASL regular season.
The international friendly will be included in the package offered to Scorpions season ticket holders. Individual game tickets are also available at prices ranging from $12 to $66 and can be purchased at the Toyota Field Box Office, through Ticketmaster or by calling the Scorpions at 210-495-8686.
"This will be our final test prior to the start of our regular season and I will expect our team to be prepared to play a very good Saprissa squad," said Head Coach Alen Marcina. "We will approach this match like it is a regular season game and I anticipate a highly competitive contest."
The friendly marks the first meeting between the Scorpions and "El Monstruo Morado", or "Purple Monster", and will be Saprissa's first visit to Texas since playing Major League Soccer's Houston Dynamo in the CONCACAF Champions Cup (now called Champions League) semifinals in 2008. Saprissa has won the Primera Division - Costa Rica's top league - a record 29 times and their three CONCACAF Champions Cup trophies are the most of any team not in Mexico's Liga MX.
"We strive to bring the very best games we can to Toyota Field and this match against a well-respected club like Saprissa will be an excellent test for our team prior to the start of our NASL season on April 12 against Minnesota," said Scorpions' President Howard Cornfield.
In 2005, Saprissa finished third in the FIFA Club World Cup, the tournament that annually crowns the best club team in the world. Mexico's Necaxa (2000) and CF Monterrey (2012) are the only other teams in CONCACAF history to have matched the Costa Rican club's feat.
The Scorpions open the 2014 NASL season on April 12th at Toyota Field against Minnesota United FC. For information on Scorpions season tickets call 210-495-8686 or visit sascorpions.com.
