Scorpions Squander Early Lead

[ AMARILLO, Tex.]-The Scorpions jumped out to an early lead but were not able to hang on. Amarillo beat New Mexico 7-3 on Tuesday night in west Texas.

The Scorpions used their power play to jump out to a first period lead. Erik Johnson scored his 11th goal of the season 4:22 into the opening frame with the Scorps up a man. New Mexico went to the two-man advantage late in the first period and Konrad Reeder scored with just 0.2 seconds showing on the clock.

Amarillo finished the second period in style with three straight goals. Matt Miller capitalized on a Scorps turnover and scored his ninth goal of the season.

The Gorillas then turned to their power play for momentum. Shaun Arvai tied the game with a shot from the blue line 17:11 into the second period. Amarillo took their first lead of the game when Chris Lipsett beat Mike Minard to the glove side with 49-seconds showing on the middle period clock.

Early in the third period, Amarillo added to their lead with David Nimmo's power play goal. Only two and a half minutes later, as Austin Sutter scored his 17th tally of the year.

The Scorpions got some help from the home team. Craig Macdonald attempted a pass to Konrad Reeder. The puck deflected off defenseman Chad Grisdale and into his own net.

Amarillo went back to the power and for the fourth time in the game scored with the man advantage. Nimmo notched his second goal of the evening at the 13:26 mark. Trevor Read finished the game's scoring a minute later.

Thursday the Scorpions travel to Odessa. The Southwest Division battle with the Jackalopes gets under way at 6:05 pm. Tune into 610 The Sports Animal to hear the game live or watch it free on the CHL Network.
