Yuma Scorpions News Release
(Yuma, AZ) â The Yuma Scorpions announced today that they have signed 2nd Baseman Luis Munoz to a contract. The signing of Munoz puts the Scorpions' spring training roster at 31 players. The Scorpions will spend their two weeks of spring training deciding which of those will be good enough to make the final 24-man Opening Day roster.
The San Diegan hopes his second trip to Yuma in the last two months will be as productive as his first. The first trek came in early April, when the 24-year-old Munoz joined a slew of other infield prospects hoping to earn a spot on the Scorpions' Spring Training roster. Munoz quietly went through the paces like the rest, but in the end, there was something different about him that Benny Castillo liked enough to extend the invitation to return for spring training, which begins on May 10th at Desert Sun Stadium. "Luis deserves a chance to play pro ball," said Castillo. "He's attended every tryout in every league possible to give himself a chance. He's fundamentally sound... on and off the field. In fact, what might have impressed me even more than what he showed between the lines was what a great gentlemen he was all the time. That says a lot about his background." Munoz was a two-time All-Lone Star Conference selection at Abilene Christian University after spending his first two college years staying close to home at Southwestern JC in San Diego.
The Scorpions' inaugural season officially begins on Thursday, May 26th, as the Scorpions travel to face the Mesa Miners in a four-game set. The game will be broadcast live on the flagship station of the Scorpions, KBLU 560AM, starting at 6PM. The Scorpions will kick off their home season with the Scorpions' Opening Day Fan Fest on Monday, May 30th, when the Scorpions host the Surprise Fightin' Falcons at a special time of 5:05PM. The gates at Desert Sun Stadium will open at 3, and fans that come early to the Scorpions' Opening Day Fan Fest will be treated to: 1) the âGuns N' Hoses' charity softball game pitting Yuma Area Law Enforcement against Yuma Area Fire & Emergency Personnel; 2) live music from the band âMogollon'; 3) many more activities for the entire family. The first 1000 fans through the gates that day will also receive a special Scorpions' Commemorative Ticket of Opening Day, and a free magnet schedule courtesy of Wild West Motorsports.
