Scorpions re-sign Tena

Yuma Scorpions News Release

(Yuma, AZ) – The Yuma Scorpions announced today that they re-signed one of the members of their spring training roster, relief pitcher Miguel Tena, and released right-handed pitcher Joey Cress. The move comes on the eve of the Scorpions' 9-game road trip through Fullerton, Long Beach, and Chico.

Tena joins the club just in time to return to his old stomping grounds. Tena spent his college years pitching for Fullerton JC, and with the Cal-State Fullerton Titans. Tena-a native of the Dominican Republic came to the United States right out of high school to learn how to speak English, and play professional baseball. He's accomplished goal number one rather well, and will finally get the chance to realize goal number two. Tena came to the Scorpions' spring training camp fighting for a roster spot, but struggled during spring training, and was the last cut made. Tena pitched in two official exhibition games, and gave up 3 earned runs and 5 hits in 4 innings of work, while walking seven and striking out three. At the time of the cut in late May, Scorpions' Manager Benny Castillo remarked how the velocity of Tena's pitches-which had started in the 90's at the start of the preseason-had steadily decreased during camp, along with Tena's control. But on Monday, Castillo said that Tena had gone home, and rehabbed some nagging injuries and soreness to the arm, and expects to see that speed and velocity return.

Meanwhile, Cress spent twelve days on the Scorpions' roster after being cut by the Fullerton Flyers in spring training. He made four appearances for the Scorpions, including starting against his old team, the Flyers, June 2nd. Cress leaves the Scorpions without a decision and a 6.23 ERA. Cress went 8 2/3 innings, giving up 6 earned runs, walking 3, while striking out 5.

The Scorpions' 9-game road trip begins tomorrow with a 2-game set against the Fullerton Flyers, then moving onto Long Beach for four games (Thursday through Sunday) before winding up the trip June 21st and 22nd at Chico. All of the games will be broadcast live on the flagship station of the Scorpions, KBLU 560AM. The games will also be streamed through the internet, and the internet broadcast-sponsored by Team Ramco-available at www.yumascorpions.com. Tuesday through Saturday's broadcasts will all start at 6:45PM with the pre-game show. Sunday's broadcast from Long Beach will start at 12:45PM. Tuesday night, the 21st, the Scorpions-Chico Outlaws broadcast will start at 6:45PM, and Wednesday's doubleheader broadcast at 4:45PM. The Scorpions will return home Friday, May 24th, for a 3-game set against the Mesa Miners.
